Note: This blog will not advise you about local winegrowers, as we don’t want to cause offence. We are happy to discuss local wineries and share information with our guests when they arrive, according to their interests and preferences.
The Lagarde domaine is in Rosey (12km in the direction of Buxy, just after St Désert in the direction of Buxy) and is therefore not local.
Why highlight this domaine?
The Lagarde family has restored the former abandoned priory, installing the vats for winemaking, the cellar and its barrels and the tasting cellar. There are other spaces under development. Considering the size of the place, we admire the necessary energy that it took to carry out these renovations.
This very impressive work deserves respect!
Following this, running the business was, for a long time, a matter of winegrower and not of winemaker, the grapes being delivered to the cooperative of Buxy. The new generation of the family decided quite recently to vinify part of the production themselves and the first vintages date from 2019.
Why is this interesting, considering the profession of winemaker takes years (tens?) to acquire?
Because you can see the freshness, the dynamism, and the innovative ideas used in the early stages of a new activity - and their results are already very convincing, both for the red and white wines, resulting in some rewards!
In this spirit, I like the approach of not "disturbing" the wine too much during the various handlings (from the vat to the barrels, from the barrels to the bottles) and the idea of placing the vats in a large space just above the cellar which then makes it possible to fill the barrels gently.
Indeed, holes in the ceiling of the cellar make it possible to insert a pipe and allow the wine to flow, thus filling the barrels simply by the effect of gravity.
Finally, the welcome is perfectly provided by Lucille (see below), we enjoy going back there regularly.
Find Domaine Lagarde: 2 Rue du Treuil - 71390 Rosey - the estate is signposted from the road to Buxy and you can also find your way following the sign directing you to the church. So, turn right from the Route de Buxy, go up the Route du Prieuré, and at the crossroads with the church, turn right without going into the rue du Treuil. The estate is right next to the church (quite logical for a former priory).
Organize your tasting visit: I recommend calling Lucille on 06 26 53 19 23 to make an appointment, preferably an appointment at the end of the afternoon.
Spending a moment at this winegrower can be combined, with a tour to towns south of our gites: Buxy, Sercy, Saint-Gengoux, Cormatin, Brancion, Tournus, Cluny...
The wines: you can consult the details of each wine on the Domaine Lagarde website.
Most of the parcels of Côte Chalonnaise vines are located near Culles-les-Roches.
WHITES: Côte Chalonnaise (2 terroirs), Montagny 1er Cru (2 terroirs), Mercurey white, and Aligoté depending on the year.
RED : Côte Chalonnaise (2 terroirs), Mercurey.
CREMANT Brut Blanc de Noir
The prices vary between 9€50 and 17€.
The tasting: the cellar is attractively decorated. It is very welcoming and, if you are lucky, you can taste some gougères to accompany the tasting. Lucille’s welcome is warm and not overwhelming. The wines are presented for tasting in a carefully studied order according to the maturation of the wines. All the advice is given to go with the wines, to enhance your understanding of them...
